Understanding Aircon Gas Top Up in Singapore
Your air conditioning system relies on refrigerant gas to absorb heat from your room and transfer it outside. When refrigerant levels drop below the manufacturer’s specifications, your aircon loses its ability to cool effectively. This is one of the most common reasons for an aircon that is not blowing cold air.
At Billy Aircon, we provide professional gas top-up services for all three refrigerant types used in Singapore aircon systems: R22, R410A, and R32. Our technicians carry calibrated equipment and hold the necessary licences for handling all refrigerant types, including the newer R32 gas that requires special certification.
Three Types of Aircon Refrigerant
Understanding which refrigerant your aircon uses is important because each type has different properties, costs, and handling requirements.
R22 (Chlorodifluoromethane)
R22 is the older-generation refrigerant found in non-inverter aircon systems manufactured before 2015. It is being phased out globally due to its ozone-depleting properties. While R22 gas is still available for servicing existing units, no new aircon systems use this refrigerant.
- Price: S$50-S$80 per unit
- Systems: Older non-inverter models
- Note: If your R22 system needs frequent top-ups, consider upgrading to a newer R410A or R32 system for better efficiency and long-term savings
R410A (Difluoromethane blend)
R410A is the most widely used refrigerant in Singapore aircon systems today. It is found in most inverter and non-inverter split systems manufactured from 2010 onwards. R410A operates at higher pressure than R22, which is why the two refrigerants are never interchangeable.
- Price: S$60-S$150 per unit
- Systems: Most current inverter and non-inverter models
- Brands: Daikin, Mitsubishi Electric, Panasonic, and most others
R32 (Difluoromethane)
R32 is the newest generation of refrigerant, offering 30% better energy efficiency and a significantly lower global warming potential compared to R410A. It is used in the latest aircon models from Daikin, Panasonic, and other forward-thinking manufacturers.
- Price: S$80-S$200 per unit
- Systems: Latest generation inverter models (2020 onwards)
- Important: R32 is classified as mildly flammable (A2L) and requires licensed technicians for handling

Signs Your Aircon Needs a Gas Top Up
Refrigerant does not get “used up” during normal operation - your aircon system is a sealed loop. If gas levels are low, it means there is a leak somewhere. Here are the telltale signs:
Warm or room-temperature air from the vents - This is the most obvious sign. Your aircon runs but the air coming out is not cold. The compressor is working but there is insufficient refrigerant to absorb heat.
Ice forming on copper pipes - When refrigerant is low, the remaining gas expands too much inside the evaporator, causing the temperature to drop below freezing. You may see frost or ice on the copper pipes connecting to the outdoor unit.
Compressor running non-stop - A properly charged system cycles on and off as the room reaches the set temperature. Low gas means the room never reaches temperature, so the compressor runs continuously, increasing your electricity bill.
Hissing or bubbling sounds - If you hear unusual hissing from the indoor unit or bubbling from the piping, this could indicate a refrigerant leak in progress.
Higher electricity bills - An under-charged aircon works harder and runs longer to achieve the same cooling, consuming significantly more power.
Why We Always Check for Leaks First
At Billy Aircon, we never simply top up gas without checking for leaks. Here is why this matters:
Topping up gas on a leaking system is like filling a bucket with a hole in it. The gas will leak out again within weeks or months, and you will need another top-up. This is a waste of your money and bad for the environment.
Our leak detection process includes:
- Visual inspection of all piping joints, flare connections, and service valves
- Electronic leak detector scan along the piping run and around the evaporator coil
- Soap bubble test on suspected leak points to visually confirm
- Pressure hold test if a leak is suspected but not immediately found
If we find a leak, we discuss repair options with you before proceeding. Small leaks at flare joints can often be tightened or re-flared on the spot. Larger leaks in the evaporator coil may require part replacement.

The Gas Top Up Process
Once we have confirmed there are no active leaks (or after repairing any leaks found), the gas top-up follows a precise process:
-
Identify refrigerant type - We check the data plate on your outdoor unit to confirm the exact refrigerant type. This is non-negotiable - wrong refrigerant destroys compressors.
-
Connect manifold gauges - We connect our calibrated gauge set to the service valves on the outdoor unit to read current pressure levels.
-
Calculate gas required - Based on the pressure readings, ambient temperature, and the manufacturer’s specified operating pressure, we calculate how much gas needs to be added.
-
Add refrigerant - Gas is added slowly and precisely through the service port while monitoring pressure in real time.
-
Verify temperature differential - After topping up, we measure the temperature of air entering and leaving the indoor unit. A healthy system shows an 8 to 12 degree Celsius temperature drop.
-
Record readings - We note the final pressure readings on your service record for future reference.
R32 Gas: Why Licensed Technicians Matter
R32 refrigerant is classified as mildly flammable under safety standard ISO 817 (A2L classification). While the risk is low in normal use, handling R32 during servicing requires specific training and certification.
Billy Aircon has licensed R32 technicians on our team. This means we can safely service and top up the latest generation aircon systems from brands like Daikin, Panasonic, and Fujitsu that have transitioned to R32.
If your aircon uses R32, always verify that your service provider has R32-certified technicians. Improper handling can be dangerous and will void your manufacturer warranty.

What's Included in Gas Top Up
How Gas Top Up Works
Diagnosis
We connect manifold gauges to your aircon system to measure current refrigerant pressure. Low pressure readings confirm gas is needed.
Leak Detection
Before topping up, we inspect piping joints, flare connections, and the evaporator coil for leaks using electronic leak detectors and soap bubble testing.
Gas Top Up
The correct refrigerant type is added to bring pressure back to the manufacturer's specified level. We use calibrated gauges to ensure precise charging.
Performance Verification
After topping up, we measure the temperature differential between inlet and outlet air. A properly gassed unit should produce a 8 to 12 degree Celsius drop.
Our Work
Why Choose Billy Aircon for Gas Top Up
